Movie Review: Charlie St. Cloud
For this post, I will review the movie in a perspective of a moviegoer, not as a person who read the book it was based on. Charlie St. Cloud was based on the book, The Death And Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood. I was first intrigued by the movie because of its trailer but it also look like a rip-off from The Sixth Sense. At first, I thought it was adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel since it has all the same elements: A quite town, a death, and a love story. I never thought that Zac Efron did well for the title role and I even disassociate him from musicales so there's a potential of him not just a performer but a real actor as well. The most obvious expected moviegoers are the women for this type of movie. Charlie St. Cloud opens September 29 in all Philippine cinemas by United International Pictures.

Movie Review of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Director Oliver Stone once again shows the real world in a sequel to his 1987 classic, Wall Street. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps brings back Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko in this sequel. The first movie paired Douglas with Charlie Sheen as Bud Fox but was now replaced by Shia LeBouf as Jacob Moore. The story takes place after many years, when Gekko was released from prison. As expected from an Oliver Stone movie, it also involves conspiracy that usually happen in America's business and commercial district. Stone reveals that it is a sad reality we need to face that greed and money can motivate one's person because survival to the fittest still applies in the market. But there are logical insights that can be applied when you are watching Wall Street. Like any other Stone movie, it was not meant to entertain but to open minds to reality and make the viewers engaged in the story. The movie is a stand-alone story from the first movie that you can still watch though there were only verbal flashbacks from Gekko's lines which is not totally relevant. If you watch the first one, then it's good for you. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps opens September 29 in all Philippine cinemas by 20th Century Fox.

iPhone 4 is now in the Philippines
Every year, new gadgets come and old gadgets go. We never get satisfied with what we have. Why? Because we adapt to change, to new things. The iPhone 4 is no exception. Last September 24, Globe announces that launch of iPhone 4 in their company.
The Stainless Steel Band Alloy is forged to be five times stronger than regular steel. The band provides impressive rigidity and also functions as the iPhone 4’s antenna. The iPhone 4 is being run by Apple A4 Processor that able to perform jobs simultaneously and does multi-tasking, video editing and placing FaceTime calls. As if you already have a handheld computer with you. The iPhone 4’s camera can shoot 5 megapixel images and HD videos. It also has built-in LED flash.
Usually, mobile phones have one microphone. The iPhone 4 has two. One located at the bottom next to the connector and the second microphone is built in the top near the headphone and works with the head microphone to suppress unwanted and distracting sounds.
Lastly, the Multi-touch display. A panel laminated on the glass display senses your touch using electrical fields. In summary, the iPhone 4 is a mobile phone innovation that I only see in SciFi stories before that became a reality.

Movie Review: Legends of the Guardians
Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder makes his animation debut with the fantasy family adventure “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” based on the beloved Guardians of Ga’Hoole books by Kathryn Lasky. The film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.
While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd’s jealousy has terrible consequences—causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians—Soren’s only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.
The film features the voices of Helen Mirren, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Ryan Kwanten, Anthony LaPaglia, Miriam Margolyes, Sam Neill, Richard Roxburgh and David Wenham.
Snyder directed “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” from a screenplay by John Orloff and Emil Stern, based on the Guardians of Ga’Hoole novels by Kathryn Lasky. The film was produced by Zareh Nalbandian, with Donald De Line, Deborah Snyder, Lionel Wigram, Chris deFaria, Kathryn Lasky and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers.
The film’s production designer was Simon Whiteley, its art director, Grant Freckelton, its editor, David Burrows, its digital supervisors, Aidan Sarsfield and Ben Gunsberger, its animation director, Eric Leighton, its previz & lensing director, David Scott, its head of story, Alexs Stadermann, its supervising sound editor and designer, Wayne Pashley, its animation supervisor, Alex Weight, its character supervisor, Damien Gray, its environment supervisor, Greg Jowle, and its composer, David Hirschfelder.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Village Roadshow Pictures Production, an Animal Logic Production, “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.”
Review:
Kludd chases a bird |
The animation was great especially in IMAX. The 3D was amazing in the action scenes. Although the owls still look like the penguins of Happy Feet. They even add drama to it in a bullet-slow motion effect like in The Matrix. Love the cinematic chase scene of Kludd, one of the characters of the movie.
For the characters, I can relate myself to Soren, a protagonist of the story, in a lot of ways. Like Soren, he dreams of his heroes, which is the luxury we don't have in this time and age. Soren's dreams is all that he got to motivate himself that made him a crucial part of the story. His struggles can be all too real. Even though the story was set using owls as a medium, there are parallelisms that can be connected to the human society.
I also like the imagination of creating the characters. Since it was based on the book, which I haven't read yet, they were done so neat. The choice of weapons of the owls were saw cool like Wolverine's claws. Owls were not the same level of hawks but they are also predators that hunt smaller preys like birds and rodents.
The ensemble has a great casting. My personal favorites Sam Neill and especially Hugo Weaving were ideal for their respective roles. I can see why they chose Weaving since he is my favorite antagonist as Megatron in Transformers and Agent Smith in The Matrix and as an antihero in V for Vendetta.
In summary, I recommend this movie for the whole family to watch. it is not violent and it will be guaranteed pure enjoyment. Since it is a Warner Bros. production, expect a new Looney Tunes 3D short film starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote to start up your movie with pure fun. Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole opens in all Philippine cinemas on September 24 and is distributed by Warner Bros. Photos courtesy of Warner Bros. Phils.

Hosted by Winnie Cordero |
Three teams of Wok-a-Holics face-off for the title of Wok Grand Champion at the final round of the Electrolux “Wok-a-Holic Kitchen Masters” cooking competition at Walternart North Edsa.
Brothers Edwin and Robert Leceta |
After several rounds of grueling wok cooking, only the best and most passionate Wok-a-Holic pairs remain to advance to the finals, where their wok skills were put to the test as they showed off their own Fusion recipes for three dishes - one Rice dish, one using Noodles and the last featuring Meat or Seafood, using Electrolux cookers that were especially designed for wok cooking.
Mother and daughter team Cynthia and Monina Sto. Domingo |
The top three teams competing at the finals are: the Big Brother team composed of Edwin and Robert Leceta, who wowed the judges with their Piña Orange Beef Steak and Ginger Beef dishes at the semis; the Mum and daughter duo, composed of Cynthia and Monina Sto. Domingo, who delighted the judges with their Meatball with Caldereta Sauce and Sweet & Sour Sauce Prawn during the first two rounds, and Pinay Team members Anna Maria Damacion and Yuka Nunuora, whose delicious Pinoy Pizza and Congee Balls knocked out the competition in the eliminations..
Anna Maria Damacion and Yuka Nunuora |
Renowned celebrity Chef Bruce Lim, host of Asian Food Channel’s Tablescapes: Life on a Plate and owner of the elegant private-dining establishment Chef’s Table, continued to serve as the Chef Consultant, judge and food critic, along with host Winnie Cordero who annotated the exciting wok cooking action. And they certainly had a tough time choosing between these three talented Wok-loving teams!
