The first adidas HomeCourt in the Philippines

On my second time at U.P. Town Center, I am glad that there are now more stores and the place expanded. One of the stores that just opened there was the first adidas HomeCourt store in the Philippines. The adidas HomeCourt is specifically targets basketball players.

Upon entering the HomeCourt, you will feel like you are in basketball haven. The entrance design looks like a stadium entrance and the display stand looks like the rotating scoreboard. But the best part is the fitting room that looks like a locker room.

That makes the HomeCourt unique. Even when you just stand at the entrance, you get to see the whole store and see what you want to buy. But there is also a portion of adidas Originals but it is mostly for sports.

RIVER SAFARI’S KAI AND JUNIOR TO TRAVEL TO THE CARRIBBEAN FOR WORLD’S FIRST MANATEE REPOPULATION PROGRAMME

SINGAPORE – River Safari’s Kai and Junior are set to become the first two manatees in over a century to arrive in Guadeloupe. The pair are pioneer animals for the world’s first manatee re-population programme.
Spearheaded by the National Park of Guadeloupe, the historic conservation project aims to reintroduce the Antillean manatees in Guadeloupe through a breeding programme with a founding group of 15 manatees from various zoological institutions. An important cultural symbol locally, the West Indian manatee species has been extinct in the waters of Guadeloupe since the beginning of the 20th century as a result of excessive hunting activities.  
Kai and Junior will be the first to arrive at the Grand Cul-de-sac Marin, a protected bay which measures 15,000 hectares and would shield the manatees from boating traffic by way of an enforced no-entry zone. The future offspring from this founding group will be reintroduced to the wild, eventually repopulating the Caribbean region.
Dr. Cheng Wen-Haur, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Life Sciences Officer, Wildlife Reserves Singapore, said, “We have been very successful in breeding manatees in our care for the past 20 years. We are very happy that this success will now contribute to restocking part of the species’ historic range in the Caribbean where it has been extinct for the past century. Projects like this is one of many ways that we are contributing to the survival of species in the wild.”
Kai and Junior have been selected as they have reached sexual maturity, and are best pals inside the aquarium due to age similarity. Kai was born on 8 October 2009 and Junior was born on 2 February 2010. They are almost inseparable, and can often be spotted swimming and feeding together. 
Kai and Junior’s flight to Guadeloupe will occur within the next few weeks, and is likely to take more than 30 hours with several pit stops. Although a date has not been set, aquarists have been busy conducting operant conditioning, and spending extra time with them before the final farewell. Canvas conditioning is required to ensure that both manatees are comfortable and familiar with the material on export day. Kai and Junior will take turns to be guided to rest on their canvases, and a hoist will then lift the canvas to place the manatees inside their open top traveling crates, custom-fitted to their lengths.
These crates are lined with thick sponge to ensure that Kai and Junior remain comfortable throughout the flight, and also to absorb water which has to be periodically sprayed on the manatees to keep their skin moist. In true VIP style, Kai and Junior will have their personal flight entourage, which includes veterinarians from the National Park of Guadeloupe, and two aquarists from River Safari.  
“The ultimate conservation goal would be to reintroduce threatened animal species to the wild and yet it is a very rare opportunity for this to happen as there is a severe lack of suitable wild habitats, among other challenges. We are very happy that the manatees will have such an opportunity. We are confident that Kai and Junior will do well for the good of their species”, said Keith So, Deputy Head Aquarist at River Safari.
Manatees are currently listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Their numbers have declined in the last century due to hunting pressures, entrapment in commercial nets and collisions with propellers and motorboats.

Another classic work of Hans Christian Andersen will be premiered through its famous story of “THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES” by Kids Acts Philippines, the premier children’s theatre in the country. This is the company’s 14th Musical Theatre Season offering for schools, parents, children and the entire family.



Kids Acts Philippines proudly presents “THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES” with script, lyrics and direction by LUIGI NACARIO, who won his first writing crown from BroadwayWorld Philippines Awards through Hansel and Gretel Musical and music by EUGENE BELBIS, who recently won his Best Musical Director Trophy of last year’s ALIW Awards through Beauty and the Beast Musical. These two collaborators of creating children’s musicals were named by critics as the Philippines’ “Jim Eiler and Jean Bargy”, the renowned creators of children’s musicals of the world.


            The Emperor’s New Clothes is a story of honesty, forgiveness and humility. It corners the Emperor’s vanity to clothes and living a life of extravagance, luxury and lavishness. It was said that the Emperor loved beautiful new clothes so much that he spent all his money on being finely dressed. He loved going to the theater or fond of riding about in his carriage to show off his new clothes. He had a different costume for every hour of the day. He was the ruler who spent most of his time in his dressing more than at the palace’s court. One day his royal wife and at the same time his fashion confidant suggested of a grand and extravagant thanksgiving parade. The royal couple invited all the finest weavers in the kingdom to create cloth that will exalt the emperor to be envied by all. Until, he was swindled by the two weavers, who claimed to be weavers who knew how to make the finest cloth imaginable with colors and patterns were extraordinarily beautiful, that its material had the amazing property which was invisible to anyone who was incompetent and stupid. The announcement went around the kingdom that the emperor will be parading new clothes and only those who were sensible can see its magnificence. On the day of thanksgiving, everyone praised the emperor’s new clothes, while all the people were applauding and giving good admiration to the king and his costume, a child’s voice echoed confidently up in the air that made everyone stupefied and speechless. He shouted, “The Emperor doesn’t have anything on!”, the statement brought  each one to realize that the child was right. The emperor shuddered, for he knew that they were right, but he thought to just go on walking together with the chamberlains carrying the train that wasn't there. He immediately ordered to capture the tricksters and punished them accordingly. The two tricksters pleaded for forgiveness and promised to create the real splendid clothes for him as a sign of their honest repentance as they were true fine weavers before they became dishonorable cheaters. After several days, the new clothes of the emperor was finished that only wonderful words can be said to describe the creation being a real masterpiece of all time. The emperor announced a second royal procession not to brag his clothes but to celebrate the true spirit of happiness that people should get hold of for a progressive and peaceful kingdom that will make all live happily forevermore.

LRMC conducts trial run for extended hours in LRT-1

To serve late night commuters, Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) conducts a trial run of extended operating hours for Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT 1) from July 10 until August 9.

 “If the test run will show an interest from the public, then we would be pleased to do a more detailed study to make it permanent,” LRMC President and Chief Executive Officer Jesus Francisco said.

For the duration of the month-long dry run, LRT 1 service hours will be extended for one hour, with northbound trains leaving Baclaran Terminal at 9:40 p.m., 9:50 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and southbound trains leaving Roosevelt Terminal at 10:10 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.

On weekends and holidays, northbound trains will leave Baclaran Terminal at 9:10 p.m., 9:20 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. while southbound trains will leave Roosevelt Terminal at 9:40 p.m. and 9:50 p.m.

LRT Line 1 currently has an average daily ridership of 400,000 commuters from Baclaran in Pasay City to Roosevelt in Quezon City.

LRMC took over operation and maintenance of LRT Line 1 in September 2015. It will also be responsible for the construction of the 11.7-kilometer extension from the present end point at Baclaran to the Niog area in Bacoor, Cavite. The extended rail line is expected to help increase the capacity of LRT 1 from 500,000 to 800,000 passengers daily and benefit more than four million residents in the southern part of Metro Manila and of Cavite.

GQWEST IMPLEMENTS RESOURCE CONSERVATION MEASURES

GQWEST Inc the country's premiere water franchising company has taken another step towards greening its operations by installing resource conservation methods in its Superstore.

As part of its Green Mindset Program the company installed solar panels and a system of underground and overhead cisterns to reduce its resource consumption. The company's Superstore located in Lincoln street Quezon City is its industrial grade water station that caters to its institutional clients like SM malls and Globe Telecom.

The solar panels installed will allow the company to reduce its electrical consumption. At the same time, the cisterns installed will store rainwater and help reduce water consumption and eliminate wastage. The company expects to benefit from these twin measures as it seeks to pair environmental sustainability and greater operational efficiency.

Since it began operations, the company has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint through its Green Mindset Program. Apart from its latest initiatives the company has also been a longtime supporter of environmental NGO's like Haribon having regularly participated with the group's tree planting program.

Adidas Cup

Thanks to the universities, Filipinos now enjoy football even though we are considered a basketball country. It even got more hype when cable TV now plays international sports events like the World Cup.

Now, there are more than just one football clinics. In one of the football festivals I attended recently, I got to interview a girl football player and she even showed that she can compete with any boy at the field.

Last July 3, not only that I witnessed that our local teams can also play against any team from abroad, they also showed that not even the rains can stop them from playing for fun. That only means football is here to stay. Here are the results of the recent Adidas Cup at the Gatorade Blue Pitch in Circuit Makati.

Jurong Bird Park celebrates 45 years of living colours

Charming visitors all over the world since taking flight in 1971, Jurong Bird Park is one of the most renowned bird sanctuaries with some of the largest free-flying aviaries in the world.

Suicide Incorporated stage play review

Suicide Incorporated is a controversial play written by Andrew Hinderaker about a company called Legacy Letters. It may sound nice but it is a company that helps their clients composed suicide letters to whomever they want to send it to.

It’s controversial because it is one of the oldest social problems in the society and still people are silent about it. The play expounds on how people deal with suicide whether you are the person with suicidal intent and how it affect the people around the person concerned.

It also deals with the ethical issues on getting involve if you know someone who is going to commit suicide and what should you do. Should you be silent about it or should you intervene? You may find it disturbing that there is such company like Legacy Letters but what if there is such one? Are you going to say that a person who owns such company is a bad person?

The director and actors at Twin Bill Theater consulted expert counsellors who specializes in suicide cases to help them internalize what goes on with the minds of people not just for the person with suicidal tendencies but able to see visualize the scenario for the play.

The play should not be limited to the show dates. It may also be presented in schools, churches or any institutions where it is relevant.  For the set, it is also flexible. It has minimal props and can be set up in any area. It is not like any theatre production because it does not require a stage. It makes it more immersed with the audience.
