Penguins on a Plane: Great Animal Moves

Every day, thousands of different animals are being moved around the globe on our roads, ferries, and planes. But flying a flock of Gentoo penguins all the way from New Zealand to Birmingham’s National Sea Life Centre requires a high-tech, custom-built transport crate costing £40,000. With refrigeration, air filtering and even seatbelts, the ‘penguin hotel’ must keep the birds in peak physical condition during their 12,500 mile journey.

Treetop Cat Rescue

Meet Shaun and Tom, brothers-in-law and tree arborists who make up Canopy Cat Rescue: a highly skilled two-man operation trained to climb dangerously tall trees to save desperate, stranded cats.  Over the past two years, they have rescued nearly 500 kitties from treetops as high as 165 feet!

The lifesaving events happen Wednesdays, 10 PM on Treetop Cat Rescue Wednesdays.

Man and man's best friend continue down the hard road to redemption in the sixth season of PIT BULLS & PAROLEES. Pit bull advocate Tia Torres is back to give a new lease on life to dogs that were discarded, demonised and abused – often due solely to the reputation of their breed. At the Villalobos Rescue Center, the largest pit bull rescue centre in the U.S., Tia also offers a fresh start to the more than 50 parolees whom she has employed, each trying to get their life on the right track despite being stigmatised by society for their past. This season, Tia scrambles after receiving a phone call about a severely emaciated pit bull, one of the worst cases she has ever seen. As the work continues to pile up, it’s up to Tia’s irreplaceable parolee, Earl, to build a shelter in a New York prison to convince authorities about the benefits of prison dog programmes.

This March, renowned broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough reveals the world of the arthropods – the most successful group of animals on the planet – on MICRO MONSTERS. Discover the intricate behaviour of insects, scorpions and spiders in this revolutionary new series as bugs fill the screen. From armies of killer ants and spiders weaving silken trap doors, to bees communicating with a waggle dance and assassin bugs that clothe themselves in their victims’ corpses, David and the crew get up-close and personal to capture the creepy-crawlies, setting up shoots in three different continents. Pioneering macroscopic filming techniques reveal that there is much more to these creatures than meets the eye.

Meet the jewelled cockroach wasp. She coaxes a cockroach into her clutches by first injecting it with a venom that paralyses its front legs before injecting a second venom directly into its brain. She then drags her pliant victim to an underground burrow, where she’ll lay her egg directly onto its body. The larva spends five days sucking the cockroach’s body fluids, after which it will chew its way into the abdomen and begin to feast from within. Over a period of weeks, the larva continues to grow and develop until all that remains of the cockroach is a dead, empty husk and from it emerges a fully mature adult wasp, ready to repeat the gruesome cycle.

We also get a glimpse at bug love, from courtship to reproduction. You will be surprised at the tactics that some bugs employ to get the attention of a prospective mate. There is a scorpion that engages in an elaborate dance, a wasp that dabs on perfume, a cricket that resorts to bribery, and a spider that takes playing ‘hard to get’ to a whole different level. Then there is the harvestman spider who doesn’t bother with romance or sex, reproducing solely by cloning.

And like humans, there are those who are solitary and others who thrive in communities, like the social spider that spins one enormous 30-metre web for the whole colony. The Argentine ants take it to the extreme, with a colony so vast that it spans an entire continent. How do they live? Do they have a social hierarchy? Who rules the roost? And what is the glue that binds them?

Follow two golden jackal families from Ngorongoro, Tanzania on MEET THE JACKALS. Next, travel 6 FEET UNDER THE SAVANNAH to uncover the secret lives of naked mole rats, where a sole queen imposes the law and assures the continuity of the species with a few males. MONSTER WEEK kicks off with TEN DEADLIEST SNAKES (Monday, September 15, 9:00 p.m.), a three-part series hosted by British wildlife adventurer Nigel Marven, who dodges snapping jaws and vicious fangs in the United States, Costa Rica and South Africa, while searching for the world’s most lethal serpents. To make his list, he will go anywhere and everywhere – pristine jungles, rocky deserts, rubbish dumps and even the city wasteland. Witness an incredibly slow-motion shot of a spitting cobra as it sprays venom directly into Nigel’s face, and meet the notorious puff adder along with the terrifying black mamba, the world’s fastest snake and Africa’s largest – and number one on Nigel’s list of TEN DEADLIEST SNAKES.

As the human population expands deeper into the wild, animals are beginning to fight back to protect their territory. Follow the action as Animal Planet focuses on some fearsome creatures which have no qualms with making humans their prey.

On NATURE’S MOST WANTED: CROCZILLA (Tuesday, September 16, 9:00 p.m.), join wildlife cameramen Jim and Jason on their quest to track down and relocate a gigantic 4.5-metre crocodile – dubbed “Croczilla” – that is tormenting a local village in the Caribbean Republic of Belize. The boys’ job is to investigate the attacks on local inhabitants by interviewing the victims and tracking down the beast before locals take matters into their own hands and kill the endangered animal.

In MAN-EATING ZOMBIE CATS (Wednesday, September 17, 9:00 p.m.), learn about an incurable zombie-like pathogen – the canine distemper virus – that is spreading among the world’s big cats, desensitising their fear of people. These mindless killers are ruthless and out of control, having developed a sensational thirst for human blood. The documentary looks at some chilling cases in the hunt for the truth including the killing of innocent children in Nepal, the mauling of a forest ranger in Colorado and eating of a hunter in Siberia.

Then, trace the ultimate assassins in MAN-EATING SUPER WOLVES (Wednesday, September 17, 10:00 p.m.). With razor sharp teeth, killer instincts, and senses so precise they can hear your beating heart…and smell your fear, these wolves are threatening humans like never before, even forming destructive, unstoppable super-packs. This special travels to Siberia, the epicenter of terror, where the residents of the village of Verkhoyansk are in a battle for their lives with a roving pack of 400 ravenous wolves that have already killed horses, dogs and several children. Amongst the cast of cats who are seemingly beyond help, there are two ferocious Savannah cats belonging to skydiver Jacques, who are sending his morale into free-fall. A Texan couple are freaking out over their pet Foley, who experiences ‘the night terrors’; and there’s free-pooping Whiskey, who seems to have lost all sense of toilet etiquette. Will Jackson be able affect a change in these capricious kitties where their owners have failed?

BROKEN TAIL’S LAST JOURNEY

BROKEN TAIL’S LAST JOURNEY documents the journey of life and death of a tiger destined for greatness. Broken Tail was born in Ranthambhore National Park in northern India, a vast, natural reserve that’s especially famous for its Bengal tigers. Historically revered in Indian tradition, tigers in the area were once protected by maharajahs, and then by government sanctuaries and conservation projects. But poachers have proven to be nearly unstoppable over the years, and tigers have struggled to survive, even with the protection of the park. Colin Stafford-Johnson and local guide, Salim Ali, spent over 600 days following and filming Broken Tail and his family, until it one day simply disappeared. A year later, Colin and Salim learnt that Broken Tail was killed by a train in Darra, 100 miles away from Ranthambhore. This discovery raised new questions. How did Broken Tail travel so far and why did he leave?
