" THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES " IS ALL SET TO OPEN ON JULY 29

Press release

Another classic work of Hans Christian Andersen will be premiered through its famous story of “THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES” by Kids Acts Philippines, the premier children’s theatre in the country. This is the company’s 14th Musical Theatre Season offering for schools, parents, children and the entire family.

Kids Acts Philippines proudly presents “THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES” with script, lyrics and direction by LUIGI NACARIO, who won his first writing crown from BroadwayWorld Philippines Awards through Hansel and Gretel Musical and music by EUGENE BELBIS, who recently won his Best Musical Director Trophy of last year’s ALIW Awards through Beauty and the Beast Musical. These two collaborators of creating children’s musicals were named by critics as the Philippines’ “Jim Eiler and Jean Bargy”, the renowned creators of children’s musicals of the world.

The Emperor’s New Clothes is a story of honesty, forgiveness and humility. It corners the Emperor’s vanity to clothes and living a life of extravagance, luxury and lavishness. It was said that the Emperor loved beautiful new clothes so much that he spent all his money on being finely dressed. He loved going to the theater or fond of riding about in his carriage to show off his new clothes. He had a different costume for every hour of the day. He was the ruler who spent most of his time in his dressing more than at the palace’s court. One day his royal wife and at the same time his fashion confidant suggested of a grand and extravagant thanksgiving parade. The royal couple invited all the finest weavers in the kingdom to create cloth that will exalt the emperor to be envied by all. Until, he was swindled by the two weavers, who claimed to be weavers who knew how to make the finest cloth imaginable with colors and patterns were extraordinarily beautiful, that its material had the amazing property which was invisible to anyone who was incompetent and stupid. The announcement went around the kingdom that the emperor will be parading new clothes and only those who were sensible can see its magnificence. On the day of thanksgiving, everyone praised the emperor’s new clothes, while all the people were applauding and giving good admiration to the king and his costume, a child’s voice echoed confidently up in the air that made everyone stupefied and speechless. He shouted, “The Emperor doesn’t have anything on!”, the statement brought  each one to realize that the child was right. The emperor shuddered, for he knew that they were right, but he thought to just go on walking together with the chamberlains carrying the train that wasn't there. He immediately ordered to capture the tricksters and punished them accordingly. The two tricksters pleaded for forgiveness and promised to create the real splendid clothes for him as a sign of their honest repentance as they were true fine weavers before they became dishonorable cheaters. After several days, the new clothes of the emperor was finished that only wonderful words can be said to describe the creation being a real masterpiece of all time. The emperor announced a second royal procession not to brag his clothes but to celebrate the true spirit of happiness that people should get hold of for a progressive and peaceful kingdom that will make all live happily forevermore.

IS ALL SET TO OPEN ON JULY 31

As a season offering to all schools, parents and children, Kids Acts Philippines proudly presents “ BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ” with script and lyrics by LUIGI NACARIO and music by EUGENE BELBIS which is adapted from the original book by Jeanne-Marie LePrince De Beaumont.

Beauty and the Beast is a tale of friendship and true love of a beautiful girl and a horrible beast. Their love story started when Beauty’s father gathered a rose in the beast’s garden who dearly treasured and value it beyond anything in the universe. The Beast furiously attempted to kill Beauty’s father.  He begged for his life, and he told Beast that he gathered it for one of his daughters who desired him to bring him one. The Beast decided to let him go in a condition that, he will let her daughter come to the palace willingly and stay with him as he desired. But if she refused to the idea, the merchant will go back to the palace to pay for his ungratefulness. Beauty willingly, went to Beast’s palace to save her father’s life until one time Beast asked her to be his wife but she offered friendship instead of marrying him. Beast’s persistence softened her heart and discovered that the monster had a pure heart. He gave a magical looking glass to Beauty as a gift of gratitude which was her only way to see the outside world. One day, she saw her father in the looking glass, had pined himself sick for the loss of her, she asked the monster that she longed to see her father again. He allowed her to leave the palace and went home to her father only for a week. Beauty didn’t fulfil her promise to return after a week, soon she dreamed that she saw Beast extended on the grass plat in the garden, who seemed just expiring, and, in a dying voice. On the next day, she left the house without the knowledge of her family. In the palace garden, Beauty saw Beast struggling to death, she thought that she will be losing him without telling the answer of his question every time they supped. She told the dying Beast with her regretful voice that she wanted to be his wife. After pronouncing the words, she saw the palace sparkle with light; and fireworks, instruments of music, everything seemed to give notice of some great event. Beast disappeared, and she saw at her feet, a loveliest prince that eye ever beheld. The Prince expressed his gratitude for having put an end to the charm by giving Beauty’s consent to marry him even in his scariest form. Beauty’s true love transformed Beast into a Prince and they lived forever happy that only death do them part.

Press release

CHILDREN’S MUSICAL’ AS EASTER SUNDAY TREAT ON APRIL 5

Easter Sunday is sure to become more magical and exciting for kids as Eastwood City brings ‘Alice in Wonderland: A Children’s Musical’ to Once Upon an Easter Wonderland.

A world-class children’s musical production from Kids Acts Philippines,  ‘Alice in Wonderland: A Children’s Musical’  will be staged on April 5 --- 6:30 p.m. at the Eastwood Mall Open Park as one of the main attractions of Eastwood City’s Once Upon an Easter Wonderland.

‘Alice in Wonderland: A Children’s Musical’ is based from two books of Lewis Carroll’s “The Adventure of Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. This version’s script and lyrics is by LUIGI NACARIO and music by EUGENE BELBIS.

Alice in Wonderland has captivated children all over the world for more than 150 years with its timeless and whimsical story that has been adapted into a number of different versions over the years.

Alice created her world through beautiful things in her mind. She loves to discover stories in every living thing around her. Her story started under a huge tree in an English farmyard, young Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister reading a book without pictures and conversations. To her it was boring, so she was considering, in her mind whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies.
Afterwards, she decided to rest under the tree and went to sleep. She dreamed of a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. Burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it popped down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge. In a moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

There begun her magical world of adventure in Wonderland. She met interesting creatures and characters like French Mouse, Duck, Dodo, Lory and Eaglet in the Pool of Tears; the Live Flowers, Caterpillar, The Grinning Cheshire Cat, the Cook, the Duchess, the Jolly Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, the crazy Mad Hatter, March Hare and Dormouse. In the Hearts Kingdom, she had fun time hunting Easter eggs with the King and Queen of Hearts until she became the witness in the kingdom’s court of who stole the beautiful easter eggs, where she made the Queen so furious. And Alice finally thought how she could go back to her real world from all these wonders.

KIDS ACTS Stages ALLADIN AND THE MAGIC LAMP at Star Theater with review

I first watched  a Kids Acts production when they run Mulan. Just like the previous one, they presented another story not based on Disney's version but the original story. What's good about this production was that they have catchy songs that kids can sing with.

There are also number of choruses that narrates each scene from the town folks that doubles depending on changes of scene locations. What's unique with the cast that the chorus also takes part of changing the scene background when the scene shifts to another place.

For the title role of Alladin, Noel Rayos did a wonderful job playing the part. He fitted perfectly portraying Alladin in this original story and not the street rat version. I've seen him performed in other productions and he can adapt in any role he plays. It's the first time I saw him sing solo.

It is also good to see Gian Gloria playing Alladin's love interest. I first watch her when she played Mulan.  Even though her character Princess Mona was not the protagonist unlike her role as Mulan, she was also significant to this story as it progresses.

Playing the part of the genie of the lamp is the most crucial part of the musical since it is very iconic because of Robin Williams portrayal.I got to ask the actor who played the part how he executed the part of the genie. He simply said he is a jolly person in real life and he simply put himself for the role of the genie.

I watched this on its preview run at St. Cecilia Hall in St. Scholastica's College. The story is simple for the children to understand and there are also family values to learn. It is also ideal for family and elementary schools to see. The music is also an original work for Kids Acts. Their regular run opens August 14 to 16, 2014(Thursday to Saturday) at Star Theater in Star City Complex at these times:10AM, 1PM, 4PM and 7PM for P450 per admission.
