DISCOVERY CHANNEL SEPTEMBER 2014 HIGHLIGHTS

Release Material

AGAINST THE ODDS
Premieres every Wednesday at 10:00 p.m., starting September 24. Encores every Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 9:00 p.m.

Narrated by Golden Globe-nominated actor Rob Lowe, AGAINST THE ODDS introduces real-life bands of brothers who have exhibited unparalleled bravery and endurance on the battlefield to come out on top in a fight against impossible odds. Reliving battles from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq, these are true stories of the harsh realities of war, as told by the veterans who survived to tell. The series features archival war footage and first-hand interviews to recreate pivotal moments played out from the under-the-helmet perspective of those battling on the frontlines. Hear directly from the men who stared death in the face and with the cards stacked against them, miraculously turned the tables on their enemy.

Battles profiled in the six-part series include the Battle of Hue City as well as WWII's battles of Okinawa, the Bulge, and Tarawa, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir from the Korean War and the Battle of Ramadi from the Iraq War, amongst others.

RUSSIAN YETI: THE KILLER LIVES
Two-hour special premiering Sunday, September 28 at 10:00 p.m.

On 2nd February 1959, nine college students hiked up the icy slopes of the Ural Mountains in the heart of Russia but never made it out alive. Investigators have never been able to give a definitive answer behind who – or what – caused the bizarre crime scene. 55 years on, American explorer Mike Libecki reinvestigates the mystery – known as The Dyatlov Pass incident – but what he uncovers is truly horrifying.

RUSSIAN YETI: THE KILLER LIVES, a two-hour special, follows Mike as he traces the clues and gathers compelling evidence that suggests the students' deaths could be the work of a creature thought only to exist in folklore. Based on diary accounts, forensic evidence and files that have just recently been released, Mike pieces together the graphic stories in search of what really happened that evening.

A man forgets his fiancĂ©e; strangers give away their car keys; a 230-pound boxer becomes unable to crush a polystyrene cup; THE MIND CONTROL FREAKS demonstrates how vulnerable we can all be to those who know how to manipulate us, no matter how strong-minded we believe we are. Most of us are susceptible to some form of mind control and trickery and all of us have the power to learn how to influence others – and even become control freaks ourselves.
