Summer is just around the corner, and for dance lovers around the country, it can only mean one thing—the CCP Summer Danc

e Workshop by Ballet Philippines!

What makes BP’s workshop unique is its authoritative faculty and its atmosphere of artistic excellence, professionalism and innovation. At the helm of the workshop is BP’s Artistic Director, National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, who started the workshop almost 50 years ago. 

Whether you’re a beginner or a pre-professional dancer, you will enjoy learning and honing your craft in classical ballet, modern and contemporary dance, and hip-hop and adult ballet. There are also classes in improvisation and composition, lectures in music for dance, makeup, and costume design, as well as courses for dance teachers of the Special Programs for the Arts and Senior High School Arts and Design Track. 

Reyes is joined by Adam Sage, BP’s Associate Artistic Director and Ballet Master, and guest teachers Effie Nañas and Kun-Yang Lin, who will give special master classes. BP alumni and dance professionals such as Edward Malagkit, Monette Victoria, Perry Sevidal, Gina Katigbak-Garcia, Jeng Halili, Butch Esperanza, Annette Cruz-Mariano, and PJ Rebullida, and current company members join the roster of teachers this summer. Raul Alcoseba will teach dance composition to aspiring choreographers. 

"Students can always look forward to learn something from the summer dance workshop,” says BP Dance School Director Rubylee Gomez. “What’s exciting is what they will find out about themselves and their dancing—what they’re capable of, how far they can push themselves, how to make each movement meaningful and how to work hard. They can use this not just in dancing but in everyday life."

Located in the heart of the Philippine art scene, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, dance students are immersed in Filipino culture while also studying in the same halls that have produced outstanding dance artists for almost 50 years.

Trumpets Playshop. You’ve probably seen us every year, or thought of us when summer workshops come to mind. You’ve pondered whether or not to join a musical theater class, or try your luck at striking poses for the runway! Enrolled in one of ours street dance or public speaking classes, or even upgraded to becoming part of Playhouse – the advanced level of musical theater workshops. But where did it all begin and how it manage to become a home for so many in the theater industry?

Trumpets Playshop was born as a product of TRUMPETS INC, the Philippine’s first Christian Theater company, and creators of well loved musicals such as Joseph the Dreamer, The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe, The Little Mermaid, First Name, and The Bluebird of Happiness to name a few. With Trumpets Inc, led by passionate and brilliant minds - Theater King, Audie Gemora, and business maverick, Butch Jimenez – Trumpets Playshop, its educational arm, was born. Since it’s humble beginnings in 1993, Playshop has proven to be a home that kids, teens, and grown-ups return to every summer to discover and explore their multiple talents in the performing arts such as acting, singing, dancing, hosting and modeling. And since then, it has grown and provided a wholesome, productive and enjoyable experience for its students for more than two solid decades.

In that amount of time, its graduates have made their own marks and continue to make waves in the local and international entertainment and theater industry such as teen icons, Sam Concepcion, and MTV Vj Tippy Dos Santos; Asian pop superstars Christian Bautista and Karylle, West End performers, Christine Allado  - currently Peggy in ‘Hamilton’ and formerly Vanessa in ‘In The Heights’, West End’s former Miss Saigon,“Kim”, Tanya Manalang, as well as its current European Tour ‘Kim’, Joreen Bautista, currently working alongside our homegrown Playshopper, Red Concepcion, who plays the tour’s “Engineer”.  And with much pride, it adds to this ever growing list, homegrown Playshopper and former Executive Director, Joaquin Valdes, who recently just left to join the UK touring cast of Miss Saigon to play the role of Thuy.

Not only does Playshop take pride in their graduates, but also in their leaders and faculty who have been with Playshop and now lead the theater industry to this day. From directors such as Jaime del Mundo and Freddie Santos, writers such as Luna Inocian, and Musical Directors such as Rony Fortich, and choreographers like PJ Rebullida – each of them have once called Playshop their home, and continue to serve as stalwarts of the institution.

And now on it’s 25^th year, Trumpets Playshop decided to come full circle as it gathers all generations of Playshoppers from its conception till present to celebrate our silver anniversary. As it celebrates twenty five years of success, Trumpets Playshop aims to remind the old and educate the new of what Trumpets Playshop is truly is and where we began. This year, Playshop will be #ResoundingTrumpets, as it breathes life back into TRUMPETS Inc, bring back the old and celebrating the new with its upcoming workshops:

GOOD FRIDAY PROCESSION AT SAN PABLO CITY

The Samahan ng Mahal na Pasyon of San Pablo City is proud to invite Holy Week devotees to its one and only procession on Good Friday, March 30, 2018, with the participation of over 60 carrozas depicting the various stations of the cross with the traditional images done by famous and unknown artists.

Carrozas can be viewed at the City Plaza from 3-5 p.m. The procession will start at exactly 5 p.m.

Bishop Ben Famadico will lead the procession together with the church mandated organization, marshalled by the Chief of Police of San Pablo City PSupt Germogenes Duque Cabe, provincial and city officials and barangay organizations.

Route of the procession will be closed by noontime and the City Traffic and Management officials will oversee the activities.

The Samahan ng Mahal na Pasyon was started in 1972 and officially launched in 1980.  It is headed by prominent families of San Pablo City.

Homeking: Ready to serve as gateway to mainland China market

With mainland China’s middle class expanding at an unprecedented pace, expect their income to also increase in a few years. In fact, by 2030, their consumer spending will reach a new level now seen in the European Union, an analytics company said.

According to The Economist Intelligence Unit, about 35 percent of mainland China’s population will have in excess of US$10,000 of annual disposable income, a 10 percent rise of what they have today.

Upper middle-income consumers—over 109 million of them are now in mainland China—are defined as those living in China’s first and second-tier cities, with wealth of at least US$28,000 and are able to purchase cars, branded goods and properties (in comparison, high-income individuals are those who can afford financial services, overseas travel and high-end consumer goods and services).

And with the population size of mainland China, the number of billionaires there, and the attractiveness of having a foreign domestic helper who can speak English, it will just be a matter of time for mainland China to hire foreign household service attendants. At the moment, only foreigners living in China’s mainland cities, as well as citizens of Hong Kong and Macau, are allowed to hire household service attendants from overseas.

“With a continually improving consumption level, these mainland Chinese consumers are fast becoming an attractive point for foreign household service attendants as well as top-tier household products providers that include Homeking,” announced Mr. Seung Moo Yoo, CEO of Homeking Philippines Inc. 

No.1 in mainland China

Established in 2010, Homeking is now the largest household service provider in mainland China with a customer base of over 3 million families, 30 branch companies and just last year, reported a revenue amounting to close to RMB 1 billion (US$150 million).

“With over 660,000 household service companies in China, what distinguish Homeking from the rest are the privileges its staff enjoy,” said Mr.Yoo.

He added: “unlike others, all Homeking household service attendants (HSAs) are employees of the company and thus, enjoy stable salary, follow an 8-hour working day, with complete insurance protection and follow a promotion system similar to those working in white-collar jobs. Homeking has even inaugurated 'August 9th' as HSA’s holiday in China. Now Homeking is bringing its experience to the Philippines by establishing Homeking Philippines Inc.”.

Major springboard

Homeking Philippines announced today that besides tapping premium household service market in the Philippines, it will make itself a major springboard for the mainland Chinese market to have access to the best quality and dependable domestic service professionals. “The company strongly believes in our thrust, ‘Global Sourcing for World services’,’’ said Mr. Yoo.

As explained by Mr. Yoo, the said thrust conveys two things: firstly, by “Global Sourcing”, Homeking will seek all the best resources from all over the world in order to provide the highest standard in household service attendant industry, including providing the best education and training resources in house cleaning, care taking, nanny, butler, best business model, best products for household use (such as kitchen ware, toiletries and other lifestyle products). 

Secondly, Homeking intends bring to the world all these top level services and products together with its mature business and management model. In our era of information, international and industrial division of labor has become more diversified since our pace of life and work is faster, and people all over the world are more and more relying on outsourcing services.  

Homeking has chosen the Philippines as the 1st station of its global sourcing thrust, “Filipino household service attendants (HSAs) have been known the world over for their good character and our Chinese clients will find that they are very professional, diligent and discreet, thanks to the well-established training and certification system here in the Philippines. Not only are we looking forward to introducing them into mainland China HSAs but we will also train them based on a certification system,” says Mr. Yoo.

Partnerships

To take the first step, Homeking has entered into a partnership with Filhigh GNS Inc. and Ikon Solutions Asia Inc., both prominent manpower recruitment and deployment agencies based in Metro Manila. This partnership will not only include recruiting and dispatching high quality Filipino household service attendants, English teachers and care takers to mainland China in the future, but also will involve establishing training camps with local educational institutions, enrolling Chinese participants in courses such as housekeeping, food & beverage service, cookery amongst others. In the end, we aim to produce high quality household service attendants that could ably serve Chinese clients. We also intend to tap household service markets in Hong Kong, Macao and Middle East countries—employing Homeking’s mature business model—where our two local partners have strong connection. For our part, Homeking would like to provide an even better protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“After successful pilot run in Manila, we now look forward to establishing similar training camps in Cebu and Davao, enrolling both Chinese and Filipino nationals, teaching them both Homeking and TESDA courses. We will be elevating their skills, foster their attitudes and at the same time protect them as they will be working under the tutelage of Homeking's full-time employment that ensures them on-time salary they deserve and at the same time, the proper treatment from the families they will be assigned to,” said Mr. Yoo.

Homeking believed its efforts will soon attract more Filipino household service attendants to consider mainland China and will think twice going elsewhere.

It should be remembered that last year, Philippine Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III revealed that (despite the ban and hefty penalties involved) up to 200,000 were already working as domestic helpers in mainland China illegally. These families from mainland China were attracted by Filipinos’ culture and their proficiency in English, which they believed, could help their children with their studies.

This situation will soon improve considering Chinese President Xi Jinping, during the latest 2018 National People’s Congress in China, was quoted saying: “Household service is a sunrise industry, especially considering the broad employment demand in the country, people from everywhere wants join household service whenever they come to the cities, which is just what local residents need. Service classification and training will professionalize job and satisfy various demands. This work is very important, it shall create a win-win situation if we do it right."

Other tie ups

For the past 8 years Homeking has distinguished itself as a leader in household service industry in China. However, the challenge at the moment is how to remain a step ahead of the competition. “It is not enough to simply expand our housekeeping business, we have to upgrade our service by utilizing the increasing trust of our customers that we have accumulated over time, from housekeeping to articles sorting, to interior design, and eventually to health care of our customers’ family. These are the so called elevation stairs of customer’s demand as well as sequence of customer’s trust, and we have to climb each of these steps,” Mr. Yoo revealed.

For this end, Homeking is seeking to integrate the most-trusted household services from all over the world, besides Philippines, the company also looks to Japan and the United Kingdom as its possible next stations for article sorting, care taking of senior people and toddlers.

Besides, Homeking is seeking to introduce high quality lifestyle products from independent designers worldwide as well, another gesture to acquire more business from its existing customers. GAWAD BUHAY 2017 NOMINATIONS OUT—TANGHALANG PILIPINO’ ‘ANG PAG-UUSIG’ AND BALLET MANILA’S ‘IBONG ADARNA’ TAKE LEAD

Through Facebook Live, the Gawad Buhay—the Philstage Awards for the Performing Arts, which marks its 10th anniversary this year—announced the nominations for the 2017 awards, culled from productions and performances by Philstage member-companies last year.

The FB Live event, held at the lobby of The Theatre at Solaire, was hosted by Audie Gemora and Karla Gutierrez, Philstage president and treasurer, respectively.

“Ang Pag-uusig,” Tanghalang Pilipino’s production of a new translation (by Jerry Respeto) of “The Crucible,” Arthur Miller’s classic play about socio-political paranoia, and the world premiere of Ballet Manila’s “Ibong Adarna,” featuring choreography by Gerardo Francisco and music by Diwa de Leon, both received 12 nods to lead this year’s roster of nominations.

Following them are Ballet Philippines’ restaging of its Filipino-themed “The Nutcracker,” choreographed by Edna Vida and Alice Reyes, with additional choreography by Adam Sage, with 11 nominations; and Repertory Philippines’ production of Sarah Ruhl’s play, “In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play,” directed by Chris Millado, with 10 nominations.

In the musical category, 9 Works Theatrical and Globe Live’s production of Disney’s “Newsies” took the lead with 9 nods.

The awarding ceremonies are set for April 12, Thursday, 7 p.m., at CCP’s Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).

Now on its 10th year, Gawad Buhay is the first-ever industry awards exclusively for the performing arts.

It is juried by an independent panel of critics, scholars, artists and theater enthusiasts. Outstanding individual and group achievements in various artistic and technical aspects of play, musical and dance productions and performances are honored based on quarterly citations deliberated by the members of the jury, who are required to watch all productions of Philstage member-companies for the entire year.

From the four quarterly citations (the first and second quarters are merged into the midyear citations), the jury selects the final nominees qualified to win the awards by the end of the performance season.

Philstage is the only alliance of professional performing arts organizations in the Philippines. Its members include 9 Works Theatrical, Actor’s Actors Inc./The Necessary Theatre, Ballet Manila, Ballet Philippines, Full House Theater Company (Resorts World Manila), Gantimpala Theater Foundation, Peta, Philippine Ballet Theatre, Philippine Opera Company, Repertory Philippines, Red Turnip Theater, Stages, Tanghalang Pilipino and Trumpets.
