Kinetic Advantage: Pushing the limits of OOH Media

Is out-of-home the new TV?  Well the answer could lead to yes according to Rowell Santiago, Insights Director at Kinetic Worldwide Philippines, a global out-of-home media agency.

“Given the amount of time consumers are spending out of their homes and the continuously changing urban landscape providing new venues for them to spend time in, whether for leisure or work, it has indeed changed the game on how brands can be more receptive to their target audiences,” he said.

In Metro Manila, out-of-home media has proliferated over the years despite the increasing demand to regulate the medium and the imposition of stricter guidelines around it. This popularity is evident as brands compete for space across the metropolis. However, the question still lingers on how effective the medium is, in terms of generating awareness and capturing the right audiences.

Just recently Kinetic Worldwide in collaboration with TNS Philippines, a leading global market research firm launched a pioneering research study in the country known as “Kinetic Advantage”.

The study which reveals fresh insights on out-of-home media by looking at the consumer journey of consumers across Metro Manila was formally launched recently at Special Exhibition Hall of The Mind Museum in Bonifacio Global City.  The event was attended mainly by marketing leaders from various industry sectors, media agencies and media vendors.

Highlighting this event was the presentation of how “Kinetic Advantage” enhances out-of-home media planning and buying by providing a more reliable set of information on how consumers move, who they are, and how specific out-of-home formats and initiatives are influencing their level of awareness.

It is interesting to know as well that the study revealed that out-of-home is 2nd to TV as the source of ad awareness for most consumers, opening the doors for brands to consider even more the reach and effectiveness of the medium.

With this new tool at hand, Kinetic Worldwide underscored the importance of insight development in out-of-home communications planning to stay ahead of the curve not just by knowing where to advertise but also who to influence with more precision.

G-SHOCK UNVEILS THE SHOCK THE WORLD MANILA WATCH DESIGN

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Last year, G-SHOCK celebrated its 30th anniversary. Starting with an idea to create a watch that doesn’t break when dropped, G-SHOCK stunned the world by creating a watch that challenged the very definition of toughness. The first G-SHOCK model, developed in 1983, was born from the “Triple 10” concept– 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance & 10-meter dropping shock resistance. And after 30 years, their objectives remain unchanged, and they are still in pursuit of the absolute toughness.

Today, G-SHOCK unveiled the design of the Shock the World Manila Watch. The first Shock the World event happened in New York in 2008. Since then, it has grown into a series of events that happen simultaneously all over the world. This February, Shock the World is coming to Manila, transforming a local space into an inspiring showcase of the latest Casio G-SHOCK timepieces.
Along with this exciting event, G-SHOCK will also be launching the Shock the World Manila watch, which will be available exclusively to the Philippines.

The Shock the World Manila watch comes in G-SHOCK’s signature look, with a white exterior and red, blue, and yellow accents to reflect the colors of the Philippine flag. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of G-SHOCK, there are 30 red stars on the upper portion of the strap. On the opposite side, 3 stars and a sun can be seen to represent Filipinos.

The limited edition watch, which is based from the model DW-6900NB-7, features a Mirror Dial, and is Shock Resistant and Water Resistant up to 200M. It will be available in all Time Depot Stores nationwide starting March 1.

About G-SHOCK
CASIO’s shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch is synonymous with toughness, born from the developer Mr. Ibe’s dream of ‘creating a watch that never breaks’. Over 200 handmade samples were created and tested to destruction until finally in 1983, the first, now iconic G-SHOCK, hit the streets of Japan and began to establish itself as ‘the toughest watch of all time’. Each watch encompasses the 7 elements; electric shock resistance, gravity resistance, low temperature resistance, vibration resistance, water resistance, shock resistance and toughness. The watch is packed with Casio innovations and technologies to prevent it from suffering direct shock; this includes internal components protected with urethane and suspended timekeeping modules inside the watch structure. Since its launch, G-SHOCK has continued to evolve, continuing to support on Mr. Ibe’s mantra “never, never give up”. Last 2013, G-SHOCK celebrated their 30th anniversary.

PH’s Winter Olympic bet on thin ice

Figure skater Michael Martinez is the Philippines’ first athlete to qualify for the Winter Olympics ever. In this year’s games held in Sochi, Russia, he is our lone representative.

Entering his final two months of preparation for the games, the young phenom admitted he was already feeling the heat.

“My training is not yet complete,” said Michael in an interview after a training session at the skating rink of the SM Mall of Asia. “I need four hours with a coach, but we can only afford one hour. We lack the budget.”

At 17 years old, Michael is up against 29 other top figure skaters in the Sochi games. Despite his youth and frequent asthma attacks, Michael managed to rank 28th among the best senior-level figure skaters in the planet!

Early in 2013, he landed 7th at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany that qualified him for this year’s Winter Olympics. To reach the finals, he needs to be part of the top 24 competitors in his category.

The absence of government support compelled Michael to seek sponsors elsewhere. One of his biggest supporters is SM, which donated Php 1 million for his training and other expenses related to his Olympic participation. He was actually “discovered” in SM Southmall in Las Piñas when he was still in his formative years as a figure skater.

Michael’s main supporter is his mother, Teresa, who accompanies him in his training and competitions abroad. She also knows first-hand how much the pursuit of Olympic gold can cost. “It will cost you half-a-million pesos per competition. You also pay for the airfare and hotel of the coach who charges $400 a day,” Teresa recounted, adding that Michael has already competed five times in 2013.

“One of his coaches in the US charges $100 an hour, he has an Olympic coach that charges $150 an hour, and a choreographer that charges $130.” She said that adding ice time, the daily cost of training could easily amount to $500-600.

The need for the coaches could not be stressed enough as Michael is yet to learn a crucial skill – quad jumps – a jumping technique with four revolutions. His Filipino coach Ted Domingo underscored the necessity of training abroad. “We’re talking about high level competition. In the Philippines, we still don’t have that kind of training,” he said.

The Philippines has yet to win an Olympic gold, and winning one in figure skating, in Winter Olympics at that, would be sweeter. But Michael needs more than just a dream. SM has broken the ice, so to speak, and that is enough to help him make history – for now.

PasaHero App Launches

The roads are the daily obstacle or challenge for every commuter, passenger, motorist, etc. Despite the digital era, the problem of road traffic got worse. But what we can do is to monitor traffic movement and report it. From the people who made the Bayan Patrol app, now comes the Pasa-Hero app.

The PasaHero app aims to transmit traffic reports from the commuters, motorist and even traffic enforcers so the situation will be broadcast online. Just like what we are doing with the Bayan Patrol app that is helpful to gather news as it happened, PasaHero will gather traffic reports so it will help the news media to gather traffic updates from the field. Just like the Bayan Patrol app, the mobile user acts as first correspondent or source for the news report.

The launch and presentation happened at ABS-CBN and it was already operational since last quarter. Grab Taxi was also present and they fully support the app. Grab Taxi was one of the pioneers in using mobile apps for paging a cab service.

We may not solve the traffic problem yet but it is better if we are able to avoid some traffic areas. For more tech updates, follow the L.E.N.S. blogs on Facebook.
