No To Crumpled Dreams

Last April 29, a campaign,"No To Crumpled Dreams" was launched by Dream Builders, a group of mothers whose aim is to give the best preventive health care to for every Filipino. Together with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Dream Builders strive to fight the cause of death among Filipino children-- Pneumoccocal Diseases or PDs. With this campaign, Dream Builders will try to prevent PDs from destroying lives of the children by promoting awareness to the parents.

 PDs affects children under the age of two. Children dies of PDs because they weren't able to received preventive measures when they contracted the diseases when they were two years of age

In order to sustain this advocacy, the Dream Builders and GSK in partnership with Powerplant Mall, organized an exhibit of artwork by Ma. Isabel Lopez, Evangeline Pascual, Jao Mapa and original bags and accessories by Banglos and more. The exhibit items were sold and the proceeds will go to the Dream Builders. The event was hosted by Amy Perez.

"No to Crumpled Dreams" is the first among the many campaigns that the Dream Builders will lead in order to battle these threats against health of Filipino children.

The Dream Builders are composed of medical professionals and mothers wanted to stop the spread of PDs in the country. They work hand in hand with local institutions and GSK in order to spread awareness and proper prevention against PDs.

You too can help spread awareness. Here are the facts about PDs:

1.Pneumococcal diseases ranges from serious life-threatening diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia and bacteraemia to less severe but more commonly diagnosed diseases such as otitis media (middle ear infection) sinusitis, and bronchitis.

2.Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) infection can cause serious life threatening PDs and permanent disabilities to children.

3.Middle Ear infection or Otitis media (OM) is one of the frequently diagnosed diseases in infants and chldren which can lead to developmental delays. Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and S. pneumoniae are the leading causes of acute otitis media (AOM) in children under five years old.

4.Those who survive PD may have impaired quality of life in the future because of it's long-term effects such as learning disabilities, hearing loss, mental retardation, and paralysis.

5. S. pneumoniae serotypes 1, 5, and 7F have been associated with high levels of invasiveness and causing a significant proportion of severe invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) among children.

6.GSK's innovative pneumococcal non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) protein D conjugate vaccine (PhiDCV) offers broader protection against PDs such as meningitis, sepsis, bacteremiae and pneumoniae. It substantially reduces burden of IPDs and AOM, offering additional health benefits and cost reductions.

Philippines to host Fi Asia exhibit next year

The Philippine food and ingredients sector for the first time will become the focus of a three-day business-to-business exhibition with the holding of Fi-Asia Philippines in May 2011, an event that is expected to draw into the country international and regional buyers, as well as exhibitors.

Michiel Kruse, managing director,United Business Media (UBM) for Asia (Thailand)says, "Growth in ingredients consumption in the Philippines has risen remarkably from 2.8m tonnes in 2005 to 3.8m in 2008, representing 30% growth in volume." Kruse continues, "...growing affluence, changes in taste plus awareness of nutritional issues means that consumption of high value additives has increased massively.

"The Fi Asia series(Food Ingredients Asia) started in 1995, has moved around Southeast Asia over the years. Philippine food and ingredients companies can promote their products to international visitors and buyers while exhibitors and visitors can have direct access to what the Philippines has to offer."

Marty Panganiban, president, Philippine Association of Food Technologists says, "The essence of the convention centers on better nutrition, health and wellness, and advances in functional ingredients as well as food safety and food technology. These are the key areas the Philippine market needs to improve to attain goals of global participation."

FlashForward secrets revealed in Gimme some truth

A secret liaison of no less than the President of the United States and details about FBI agent Mark Benford’s (Joseph Fiennes) own flashforward that threaten to destroy his credibility and cut funding for the Mosaic investigation are revealed in FlashForward episode 5, Gimme some truth.

After undergoing intense “grilling” in a Senate hearing that will decide whether the government would continue to fund their Mosaic investigation, Mark finally admits to FBI assistant director Stanford Wedeck (Courtney Vance) that he was drunk in his flash forward.

To take the head of the Senate committee off their backs before she cuts their funding, Wedeck blackmails the President into taking Senator Joyce Clemente (Barbara Williams) off the investigation by threatening to go public with pictures of the President having an illicit affair and an illegitimate son.

Thirty-nine hours later, the Mosaic team is attacked in two separate locations. Mark, FBI special agent Demetri Noh (John Cho), and Stanford survive a massive explosion in Washington D.C. when their car is hit by a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. They, however, emerge from the wreckage with guns blazing to take out some of the Chinese assassins.

After the blowup, Dr. Olive Belford (Sonya Walger) receives an anonymous text message that reads: Mark was drinking in his Flash Forward.

In Los Angeles, FBI agent Janis Hawk (Christine Woods) is also attacked by two gunmen. She fends off the first attacker with her Tae Kwon Do, but the second one shoots her in the stomach. Janis manages to draw her own gun in time to shoot the second attacker before he can escape, but she’s gravely injured.

The suspenseful action continues In episode 6, Scary Monsters and Super Creeps (3 May, 10 p.m.), when Demetri and Gough try to determine the links between the two attacks on the Mosaic team and follow up on a clue from Mark's Mosaic board. Lloyd is heartbroken when his son goes missing from the hospital, and finds Dylan in a most unexpected place. Meanwhile, Stanford keeps watch over the injured Janis and Olivia and Mark finally learns each other's secrets.

While in episode 7, The Gift (10 May, 10 p.m.), Mark, Demetri, Gough, and MI6 agent Fiona Banks investigate a Blue Hand club. A surprise visit sends Aaron back to square one about his late daughter. Demetri finally tells the truth to Zoey. Nicole volunteers at the hospital and decides to help Bryce with his flashforward.

Expect more revelations and explosive action to unfold in FlashForward’s next thrilling episodes Scary Monsters and Super Creeps and The Gift. The new sci-fi television series airs every Monday at 10 p.m. only on FOX Channel (Sky Cable Channel 50).
